To ensure thorough preparation for my travels, I’ve compiled a checklist over the years. Not every item applies to each trip, and I continuously update it as I discover new considerations. Besides the checklist, I consult various information sources. For instance, I refer to the Fragile States Index (FSI), which characterizes the fragility of a state. Indicators of fragility encompass a weak or ineffective central government with limited control over its territory, absence of public services, prevalent corruption and criminal activities, refugee situations, and significant economic decline. Another aspect I examine is the Economist Democracy Index (EDI), a quantitative assessment by the Economist Group measuring the quality of democracy globally. This evaluation focuses on democratic rights and institutions, utilizing a methodology from the Economist Intelligence Unit, part of the UK-based Economist Group, known for publishing The Economist weekly newspaper.
